Aliyev confirmed that the EU has approached Baku regarding gas transit through Ukraine

Ilham Aliyev called the accusations that Azerbaijan is re-exporting Russian gas a lie.

Speaking at the Second Shusha Global Media Forum on the topic “Exposing false narratives: combating disinformation,” Ilham Aliyev explained that Azerbaijan actually contracted one billion cubic meters of Russian gas when the price in the markets was extremely high, and Russia’s was affordable.

“It was a purely commercial deal, nothing more. We export 25 billion cubic meters and import only 1 billion cubic meters. So the accusations that we are some kind of channel for the export of Russian gas are absolutely unfair. It was an absolute lie,” – Aliyev said in Shusha.

The President noted that the republic does not need anyone’s gas, since it has a very developed infrastructure that allows it to diversify flows depending on the market situation. Aliyev said that representatives of Ukraine and the European Commission had approached him with a request to help with the supply and transit of blue fuel for some EU countries. Baku is in constant dialogue with all interested parties on this issue, including Moscow.

Aliyev indicated that for Russia, which is actively looking for other markets for sales, it would be very profitable to sell 50 billion cubic meters of gas on the premium European market.

"And if we can help, we will help. But we want to avoid any kind of speculative accusations that we are doing something wrong," he said.

The President of Azerbaijan, whose gas pipelines go to Russia, Iran, Georgia, Turkey, Italy and so on, really occupies a very serious position in the schemes for providing fuel to European and Asian countries.
