'121,000 evacuated, 59,000 more to leave,' says Russia's governor of Kursk region

The governor of Russia's Kursk region told President Vladimir Putin that 121,000 people have left or been evacuated from the frontline zone.

Governor Alexei Smirnov told Putin during a video conference with governors of affected regions on Monday that "as of today 121,000 people have left and been evacuated," while 59,000 more need to leave.

The civilian toll from Ukraine's incursion into Russia's Kursk region has risen to 12 dead and 121 injured.

"Twelve civilians have died and 121 have been injured, including 10 children," Smirnov added.

Governor Alexei Smirnov said Ukraine now controls 28 settlements in the border province and that Kyiv's forces have advanced 12km (7.4 miles) into Russian territory.

Russian President Vladimir Putin does not rule out the possibility of new Ukrainian attacks against country’s border areas.

"The adversary will further attempt to destabilize the situation for the purpose of stirring up the internal political situation in our country," the head of state said.

"If it is relatively calm at present in the Bryansk Region, it does not mean the situation tomorrow will remain the same," Putin added, having listened to the report of Governor of Bryansk Region Alexander Bogomaz.
