Irregular migration into Germany "must go down" after a Syrian man who came to Germany as an asylum seeker was charged with killing three people in an attack in the western town of Solingen last week, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has said.
"This was terrorism, terrorism against us all," Mr Scholz said during a visit to Solingen on Monday.
Mr Scholz also said his government would have to do "everything we can to ensure that those who cannot and should not stay here in Germany are repatriated and deported" and that deportations would be sped up if necessary.
He also promised to tighten laws on weapons ownership "very quickly".

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has pledged to tighten Germany's weapons laws and crack down on illegal immigration after a man went on a deadly knife rampage in the city of Solingen.
ReplyDelete"We will now have to tighten up the weapons regulations... in particular with regard to the use of knives," Mr Scholz said on a visit to the city, adding: "I'm sure this will happen very quickly".
"We will have to do everything we can to ensure that those who cannot and must not stay here in Germany are repatriated and deported," he added.
Germany's Chancellor Olaf Scholz said his government was looking at more ways to increase the rate of deportations during a visit to the site of a deadly mass stabbing carried out by a suspected Islamic State group member from Syria. Speaking during the visit, Scholz said that deportations had already increased by some two thirds compared to 2021 levels.
