The State Department called the attack of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the Kursk region a sovereign decision of Kyiv

The United States considers Kyiv’s actions on Russian territory to be Ukraine’s sovereign decision, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said. According to him, Washington is in contact with the Kyiv regime on this matter.

Miller called the Ukrainian Armed Forces' attempt to break into the territory of the Kursk region "an operation that they undertook on the other side of the border."

"But decisions about how to conduct its operations are Ukraine's own decisions," a State Department spokesman said.

According to Miller, Kyiv did not warn Washington about its actions on Russian territory, but this is not unusual. The State Department speaker refused to answer the question about the use of American weapons in the Kursk region and forwarded the question to the Pentagon.

Earlier, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said that the silence of Western countries regarding attacks on civilians strengthens the sense of impunity in Kyiv. She called on the international community to condemn the crimes of the Kyiv regime.

  1. The US plans to reach out to Ukraine to provide information about its massive attack on Russia’s Kursk Region, US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said.

When asked to comment on the attack at a news conference, he said: "Nothing has changed about our policy with respect to enabling or encouraging strikes or attack inside Russia, outside the bounds, of course, of what we have permitted them to do with US-supplied weapons in the past, which is to target imminent threats just across the border. The last thing I would add is that, as you would expect, we would be reaching out to our Ukrainian counterparts to get a little bit better understanding."

"I'll let the Ukrainians speak to their operations one way or the other. That's most appropriate. So I would refer you to the Ukrainian Armed Forces to speak to what they're doing. We're going to stay focused on making sure they have what they need to defend themselves," he went on to say.

  5. The US administration plans to get in touch with the Ukrainian military to learn about the objectives of their attack on Russia’s Kursk Region, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said.

"We've seen the reporting obviously. So, we're going to reach out to the Ukrainian military to learn more about their objectives," she said when asked about President Joe Biden’s attitude to the incident. "As far as the specifics on that, I would refer you to the Ukrainians to speak about their own military operations."

According to the White House spokesperson, the US administration was unaware of Ukraine’s plans to attack Russia.

When asked whether the use of US-made weapons against the Kursk Region could entail further escalation, she said, "I'm just not going to get into hypotheticals."

  6. The reason for Ukrainian attack on Russia’s Kursk Region is hard to understand at a time when Kiev’s limited forces are struggling on the battlefield, an analyst told the Financial Times.

"Given defensive pressures elsewhere <...> the strategic rationale for this operation at this time is difficult to fathom," said Mick Ryan, a retired Australian army major general.

He suggested Ukraine could be using the attack to divert attention from the progress of Russian troops in Donbass.

Rob Lee, a senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, said Ukraine’s incursion will not have a significant impact on the course of the conflict.

"A limited operation might be able to achieve limited goals, but a more ambitious operation carries greater risks," he said.
