Around 70 Islamic State militants were killed Sunday morning after Egypt's air force struck a number of outposts in the northern Sinai peninsula, according to local reports.
Most of the air strikes took place in a village just west of Rafah, near the border with Gaza, and focused on positions of the jihadist extremist group 'Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis,' a branch of ISIS-Sinai Province (ISIS-SP), according to the Arabic-language version of Sky News.
Over 70 militants were injured in the attacks, which destroyed vehicles used by ISIS-SP.
The strikes come a day after a senior Egyptian army officer was shot dead outside his home in a Cairo suburb on Saturday.
Jihadists have killed hundreds of policemen and soldiers, mostly in the Sinai Peninsula, but such attacks on senior officers are rare.
