EU spends 344 million euro to support farmers in wake of Russian embargo

EU authorities have expended more than 344 million euro from the pan-European reserves by way of financial support for the farming sector in the wake of the impact exerted on it by the Russian embargo on foodstuff imports from Europe.

TASS received the information at the press service of the EU Council.

Russia introduced the embargo in early August after the enactment of expansive anti-Russian sanctions by the West earlier this year.

Moscow Criticizes EU Attempts to Alienate Third States From Increasing Imports to Russia

MOSCOW, August 21 (RIA Novosti) – The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman on Thursday criticized the calls of the European Union member states on the third countries urging not to take advantage of Russia’s embargo on European food imports, saying that every country is free to choose its trade partners on its own.

“We believe that the third states, to which the European Union is making its appeal, are quite capable of deciding themselves what they should do in a situation that gives them new opportunities to expand their exports, including to the Russian market,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said.

Chinese premier favors closer cooperation with Greek region of Crete

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang met with Governor Stavros Arnaoutakis of the Greek region of Crete here on Saturday, vowing to facilitate closer cooperation between China's local regions and Crete in such areas as trade and agriculture.

Li expressed gratitude to the Greek government and the Cretan people for receiving Chinese nationals when they were evacuated from war-torn Libya in 2011.

"The Greek government as well as the Cretan provincial government responded promptly to our request for help, and Mr. Governor went to the port yourself to receive the first group of Chinese evacuees," Li said.

More than 1.5 million Greeks are considering moving from the city to the provinces, according to the results of a survey commissioned by the Agricultural Development Ministry that were made public Tuesday.
The survey, conducted by polling firm Kapa Research on a sample of 1,286 respondents in Athens and Thessaloniki, found that seven out of 10 (68.2 percent) have considered leaving the city for a new life in the provinces while one in five (19.3 percent) has already made the initial moves to relocate.
