Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said that Turkey is facing an uprising
attempt from inside the army, with the state-run Anadolu Agency
reporting that Chief of General Staff Hulusi Akar is being kept as a
hostage with a group.
"This cannot be called a coup for the moment. This is an uprising," he said.
The security forces are in action against this he said, in phone call to broadcaster NTV.
We will punish it the hardest way," he also said.
“No clas have been reported yet but it is normal to take all measures,” Yıldırım said.
“Our security forces will use force against force, he said.”
Atatürk Airport has been closed to traffic, with tanks waiting in front of it.
Gendarmerie has blocked entrances to bridges in Istanbul from the Anatolian to the European side of the city on July 15.
Reports said an explosion was heard in Ankara's Gölbaşı district.
Doğan News Agency reported that police in Ankara called personnel to office.

ReplyDeleteTurkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim has announced that a group of military forces has engaged in a "coup attempt" against the government.
Yildirim made the announcement late on Friday, as he vowed that the "perpetrators" will be contained.
He said that a number of generals are involved in the takeover of the government, adding that it "will never give up democracy".
Al Jazeera has learned that Istanbul's Ataturk international airport has been shut down, and all flights have been cancelled.
An Al Jazeera reporter in Istanbul also reported seeing shops closing their doors in the Taksim Square area.
"People are going home now," he said.
Istanbul's Bosphorus Bridge and Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge have also been shut down by the Turkish army, local television channels reported, without giving a reason.
The two major bridges connect the Asian side of Istanbul to the European side.
Dogan News Agency footage showed cars and buses being diverted, according to Reuters.
Reuters witnesses in Istanbul, Turkey's largest city, also spotted helicopters overhead.
"It seems there is dissent in the military ranks," Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr, reporting from Gaziantep, said.
In the capital Ankara, gunshots were heard, as military jets and helicopters were seen flying overhead, a Reuters witness said.
Turkey has had a history of coup attempts, the last time being carried out in 1997, which forced the resignation of then-prime minister Nemettin Erbakan.

A statement from the military group read out on NTV television said: "The power in the country has been seized in its entirety." Who represents the group remains uncertain.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has urged people to take to the streets to protest against what he described as a coup attempt by a minority faction within the military.

Speaking to a CNN Turk reporter via mobile phone, Mr Erdogan said that Turkish people must gather in public squares to show their response to the attempted military takeover, in comments broadcast live on television.
He said he believed the attempted coup would be over within a "short time" and said those responsible would pay a heavy price in the courts.
Turkish state broadcaster TRT has gone off air in the last few minutes, Reuters reports. Earlier, soldiers reportedly took control of its offices and an announcer read out a statement declaring martial law.

Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said earlier that Turkey is facing an uprising attempt from inside the army, with the state-run Anadolu Agency reporting that Chief of General Staff Hulusi Akar is being kept as a hostage with a group. Erdoğan neither confirmed nor denied the information, telling that there was an "obscure atmosphere" of information.
A group of civilians attempted to enter the state-run TRT, which is taken over by the group which attemted the coup, but the group inside fired at the group, wounding one person.
A military helicopter was shooting fire at the TRT building.
A group naming itself "Peace in the Country Council," published a statement on Turkey's state-run broatcaster TRT, which it had taken over during the July 15 coup attempt, that it has taken the power in the country.
The statement said the group so-called council will trial at "fair courts" all those "have betrayed the country.

Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli phoned to Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım after news broke, expressing his party’s support to the democracy and free will of the people.

A senior Turkish government official tells the Reuters news agency that a faction of the military was attempting to seize power. It had control of some tanks and had ordered troops to try to take over the streets, but had been unable to do so in many areas, the official said.
