The South Korean parliament Friday approved the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye, implicated in the "Korean Rasputin" scandal, with more than two-thirds of the votes cast in favor of impeachment.
The vote in favor of the impeachment was 234 with 56 against, seven null and two abstentions, little more than an hour after the session started, and during which 299 of the 300 lower house representatives voted.
It is now up to the Constitutional Court, where at least six of the nine judges must approve the parliament's decision in a process that can take up to 180 days.
Pending the Court's decision, Park will be immediately stripped of all of her powers as head of state, from government control to the right to veto and foreign policy decisions.
