During the meeting, General Baqeri expressed the hope that terrorism would be soon uprooted from the entire Syria, reiterating the Iranian nation and government's continued support for the friendly state.
President Assad, for his part, appreciated the all-out support extended to his respective country by Iran's Supreme Leader and the people and government of the country to counter terrorism in Syria.
Baqeri arrived in Damascus on Wednesday to exchange views with senior Syrian officials over the latest regional developments and other issues of mutual interest.
- In relevant remarks on Wednesday, General Baqeri blasted Israel for launching ground and air strikes on Syria, describing the aggression as "unacceptable".
"It is unacceptable to see that the Zionist regime launches ground and air aggression against the Syrian territories and skies any time it wants," General Baqeri said in a joint press conference with his Syrian counterpart General Ali Ayyoub in Damascus.
- He underlined the necessity for respect for other countries' territorial integrity, and said any country's military operations in another state should be launched at the invitation of its government and with full respect for its territorial integrity.
General Baqeri also reiterated Iran's support for the Syrian nation and government in fighting terrorism, stressing that Tehran and Damascus have been cooperating for nearly 40 years.
