EU sends security support mission to Ukraine. (will be an unarmed and non-executive civilian mission)

BRUSSELS. -- European Union foreign ministers on Tuesday established a civilian mission to help reform Ukraine's security strategy.

The foreign ministers said the mission, to be called the EU Advisory Mission for Civilian Security Sector Reform Ukraine, will be an unarmed and non-executive civilian mission. EU advisers will initially focus on supporting the revision of security strategies and the rapid implementation of reforms.

The headquarters of the mission will be in Kiev, the Ukrainian capital. Tuesday's decision allocates a budget of €2.68 million for the start-up phase, which will last until Nov. 30.

IDF imprisons soldiers for taking part in online calls for "revenge" (The soldiers will be behind bars for several days)

The IDF has sent four soldiers to prison on Thursday for taking part in a Facebook campaign calling for "revenge" for the kidnap and murder of three Israeli teenagers by Palestinian terrorists last month.
The soldiers will be behind bars for several days, the army said, as they acted "in violation of military orders. This is a severe incident, that does not in any way match expectations of IDF soldiers," the army added. 

Deeply concerned about eastern Ukraine, Ban welcomes extension of cease-fire

 UN, 28 June 2014 – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has welcomed the extension of a cease-fire in eastern Ukraine and, with continued deep concern about the situation there, urged all sides to honour their commitments and work within a political process.

In a late night statement yesterday from his spokesperson, Mr. Ban said he “remains deeply concerned over the situation in eastern Ukraine but he welcomes recent measures toward de-escalation of hostilities”, including consultations among all sides and the three-day extension of the reciprocal cease-fire.

UN refugee agency warns of ‘sharp rise’ in people fleeing eastern Ukraine

UN, 27 June 2014 – Some 16,400 people fled their homes in crisis-riven eastern Ukraine during the past week, bringing the number of displaced within the country to 54,000, according the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR).
“Many cite a deteriorating situation and fear of abduction for the sharp rise in displacement,” said UNHCR spokeswoman Melissa Fleming, adding “Increases were also being seen in the numbers of Ukrainians in Russia and other countries, although so far only a small number had applied for refugee status.”
Since the start of 2014, approximately 110,000 Ukrainians had arrived in Russia – with only 9,600 requesting asylum – while more than 700 others went to Poland, Belarus, Czech Republic and Romania.

Russia’s Medvedev: G7 Support for Ukraine "Cynicism without Limit"

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on Thursday accused the Group of Seven of "cynicism" for backing Ukraine's military operation against pro-federalization activists .

"The so-called G7 even talks about the measured actions of the Ukrainian army against its own people," Medvedev told ministers, quoted by the Interfax news agency.

"This is cynicism without limit."

Kadyrov ready to send 74,000 Chechens to Ukraine

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov said he is ready to send 74,000 residents of Chechnya to Ukraine to "put things in order" 

He told this to the Russian TV channel Ren TV in an interview.

When asked about the Chechens in Donetsk region, Kadyrov said that according to his information, in eastern Ukraine there were really 14 Chechens. "I was interested. Whether from the Yug battalion, or Vostok. One was killed - a young man was killed by shrapnel near the airport," he said

UN chief urges Kiev to restore state control in East Ukraine by peaceful means

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon on Tuesday called on Kiev authorities to use only peaceful means, including political dialogue, to restore state control in eastern Ukraine engulfed in violence, his spokesperson said.

"The Secretary General is alarmed by the continuing violence that we have seen over the weekend [in eastern Ukraine]," Stephane Dujarric said at a news briefing at UN headquarters in New York.

Deposed Thai premier, ex-cabinet ministers, protest leaders detained after questioning by military

Deposed Thai premier Yingluck Shinawatra, a few former Thai cabinet ministers, several anti- government protest leaders and pro-government Red Shirt leaders were detained by the military at unknown spots on Friday, sources said.

Following Thursday's coup orchestrated by army chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha to overthrow the caretaker government, Yingluck and the other prominent politicians had been questioned at the army auditorium and an army barracks and then detained at unknown "safehouses", sources said.

Thai army takes control of government amid deadly political turmoil

Thailand's army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha seized control of the government on Thursday, saying the army had to restore order and push through reforms, two days after he declared martial law.
