European Parliament Chief Says EU Southern Sea Border World’s Deadliest

European Parliament’s President Martin Schulz on Wednesday described European Union’s southern maritime border as the deadliest border area in the world, with migrant deaths in the Mediterranean topping 3,000 over the past year.

“During last year, more than 3,000 people have died on the EU Southern border. This makes it the most deadly border area in the world,” Martin Schulz, who has been a member of the European Parliament since 1994, said on Twitter.

Turkey, Greece to meet again over Aegean problems

Turkish and Greek diplomats will continue to discuss finding ways to resolve the decades-old problem of the official border between the two countries in the Aegean Sea.

A Sept. 12 statement from the Turkish Foreign Ministry announced that the 58th round of “exploratory contacts” between the two countries would be hosted in Thessaloniki on Sept. 13.

Talks began in the early 2000s to end the dispute between Athens and Ankara over territorial waters, the continental shelf and airspace over the Aegean Sea.
